Greetings from New England Moon Soap Company.  I think you will find our newsletter full of exciting and fun information. If you find this newsletter enjoyable, I encourage you to share it with your friends.

Our main topic for this month is Holistic Summer Skin Care! With all the outdoor activities you will be enjoying this summer, skin can become dry and flaky. Regular exfoliation will help to keep your skin soft, smooth and radiant. Many items right in your own kitchen can become great, natural skin care products. Below are some tips that help you create an effective and pampering skin care regimen with the ingredients found in your home.

Natural Acids for the Skin:

Natural acids such as those found in fruit, milk and wine have been used for centuries to improve the integrity of one’s skin. Cleopatra was known for bathing in milk. These natural acids can be found in the most expensive skin care lines, but they can also be found in your kitchen! Natural Acids or Alpha-Hydroxy Acids posses many complexion enhancing properties. They help remove the dulling dead skin cells from the epidermis, stimulate cell turnover and clear blemishes.

Exfoliation for the Body

We have all heard of the benefits of glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is a natural substance found in sugar, which is why many sugar scrubs have become so popular. Here is a great sugar scrub recipe that will help remove dead skin cells and is wonderful for sloughing off calluses and dry skin on your feet… especially if you will be running around barefoot this summer!

Sugar Scrub Recipe:
1 cup of organic brown cane sugar
1.5 cups of oil (I like sweet almond oil, but you can use olive oil as well)
Mix contents in a bowl and take into the bathtub. You can use this scrub all over the body. Gently rub the mixture into the skin and leave on for a few minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Exfoliation for the Face

Although you can use scrubs on the face, you may prefer to use a more delicate method of exfoliation for delicate skin. Sometimes to much abrasion can tear pores and make them appear larger and pitted over time. For a gentle exfoliation place some lemon juice on a cotton ball and dab onto clean skin. Lemons contain citric acid, another form of natural acid that will gently dissolve dead skin cells.

Calming the Skin

For a gentle and calming cleansing, use whole milk (which contains lactic acid). Saturate a cotton round in milk and wipe your face, as you would a toner. You can leave this on all day, apply cosmetics, moisturizers or sunscreen once your face is dry.

Just for Fun – Refreshing and Unique Summer Drink

Lavender Lemonade – use with powdered lemonade mix
Make a batch of lemonade with your average powdered lemonade mix – except use boiling water.
Place the hot lemonade in a pitcher.
Place about .5 oz of lavender in a muslin cloth bag and steep the bag in the lemonade. Set the lemonade aside for a few hours.
Your yellow lemonade will turn to a light pink.
Place in the refrigerator to chill.
Pour over ice and enjoy.
Lavender is edible and will not harm you and it adds a nice flavor to your lemonade.
